Silver City Strong


“An Opportunity for Residents to Help Determine how Town Resources Will be Used”

The Town of Silver City’s Community Development Department is seeking public input into the Town’s new comprehensive plan, titled Silver City Strong, a nod to the town’s long history of surviving major floods, mining booms and busts and cyclical economic ups and downs.

“Silver City was sustainable way before sustainability was cool,” says Jaime Embick, Silver City’s director of community development, calling the plan the “guiding document” for administrative and town council decision making.

“The comprehensive plan is important to every Silver City resident, because it guides Town Council decision making, and impacts all aspects of local government,” Embick explained. “Ultimately the plan determines how town resources are managed and what services are provided, and it’s only updated every 10 years. This is a great opportunity for residents to have input into those issues that shape daily life here in Silver City.”

The comprehensive planning process addresses the following topic areas:

  • Land use and community design, which also includes zoning classifications, infrastructure such as sewer and water, and considerations for open space;

  • Transportation, including traffic circulation, pedestrian safety and walkability, and bicycle lanes;

  • Housing, including determining the assessment of the need for more affordable housing;

  • Public facilities and services, such as water and sewer utilities, police and fire, library use and parks and recreation;

  • Natural resources; and

  • Economic development.

In December, the Community Development Department is hosting a series of one-hour public meetings to solicit input into each of these key areas. This is the second opportunity for public input into the plan. All meetings will be held at the Town of Silver City Annex, 1203 N Hudson Street, in the second floor conference room:

  • Land Use – Dec. 6, 3pm

  • Economic Development – Dec. 12, 3 pm

  • Housing – Dec. 13, 3 pm

  • Natural Resources – Dec. 14, 3 pm

  • Public Facilities and Services – Dec. 15, 3 pm

  • Transportation – Dec. 16, 3 pm

Once public input is complete, the Town Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will begin meeting in February to draft the 2017 plan.
