County Assessor Misty Trujillo let the commission and the public know that owners of manufactured homes will automatically be penalized 5 percent if they do not update the Assessor’s Office on any changes that have been made to their property last year — including if no changes have been made.

“It’s up to them to let us know,” Trujillo explained, “because we don’t have enough employees right now to go out and reappraise the whole county.”

She also said that forms have been mailed for the required reporting of livestock and of business assets.

Trujillo encouraged qualified property owners to claim tax exemptions such as the head-of-household and disabled veterans’ exemption, which was recently raised from $4,000 to $10,000. Those over 65 with less than $44,000 in income can also apply annually to have their property valuations frozen — and if they apply for three years consecutively, their property valuation will be frozen indefinitely. Otherwise, valuations will go up 3 percent automatically.
