The Silver City Regional Association of REALTORS® proudly recognizes April as Fair Housing Month, reaffirming our commitment to equal housing opportunities for all. As REALTORS®, we uphold the principles of the Fair Housing Act, working to eliminate discrimination and promote inclusive, diverse communities where everyone has the right to seek and secure housing without bias. Throughout the month, we encourage education, advocacy, and awareness to ensure fair and equitable treatment in the housing market. Together, we stand for fairness, equality, and the dream of homeownership for all.
History: April marks the 57th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, a landmark law co-authored by Senators Walter Mondale and Edward Brooke to address housing discrimination. Mondale, later the 42nd Vice President, recognized the need for federal intervention, while Brooke, the first Black U.S. Senator, drew from his own struggles finding housing after World War II. Their work aimed to strengthen the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which lacked federal enforcement against housing discrimination.
