Writer: Kim Clark, AE, GADKim Clark, AE, GAD

National Consumer Protection Week is a great time to reflect on what you know about the types of fraud and scams that exist in today's world, and explore the different ways to spot, avoid, and report them.

2024 statistics according to the Federal Trade Commission:

  • There were more than 9,000 reports of fraud and scams across New Mexico in 2024.

  • New Mexicans lost approximately $39.5 million to these fraudsters.

  • Imposter scams, including impersonations of family members, banks, or government agencies, accounted for the majority of fraud reports in New Mexico in 2024.

  • U.S. victims of fraud reported being contacted primarily by email, phone call, text message, and through social media, and mostly used credit cards and payment apps to send money.
